Abstract

The objective of this research is to determine vehicle exhaust emission levels when using coconutshell charcoal with variations in activation temperature. This research method was carried out in several stages, the first stage was making active carbon from coconut shells using a temperature of 750 ⁰C; 850 ⁰C; and 950 ⁰C during the activation process. The second stage is testing CO and HC exhaust emissions by adding activated carbon made from coconut shells to the exhaust pipe. The research results indicate that the use of activated carbon from coconut shells leads to a decrease in CO emissions compared to emissions from exhaust pipes without coconut shell activated carbon. The highest reduction efficiency, at 42.3%, was achieved when using coconut shell activated carbon at an activation temperature of 950°C. HC emissions also decreased when using coconut shell activated carbon. The highest reduction occurred when using coconut shell activated carbon with an activation temperature of 950°C, showing an 86.5% decrease compared to not using activated carbon. Therefore, it can be concluded that coconut shell activated carbon with an activation temperature of 950°C exhibits the most effective absorption compared to coconut shell carbon activated at temperatures of 750°C and 850°C.
