Abstract

Analysis of the students‘ text is to measure their achievement and ability in writing a specific text. This study aims to investigate the students‘ ability level in writing narrative text and its obstacles or difficulties. The focus of this study is also on the mistakes which often occurred in the students‘ text. There are three main problems analyzed in this research, which involve (a) the mistakes which often happened, (b) the difficulties or obstacles faced by the students in writing narrative text, (c) the students‘ ability level in writing narrative text. The researcher applied the descriptive qualitative method and used purposive sampling in this research. This research is qualitative and uses purposive sampling. The data was from 27 students‘ narrative text and from the questionnaire to strengthen and know the data‘s significance. The researcher using a scoring system from Jacob et al. (1981) and standard qualification based on Harris (1974). This study‘s findings show that the mistakes frequently occurred were using inappropriate capitalization and punctuation, using simple past tenses and some sentence problem such as sentence choppy, fragment, and parallelism. Besides, the students have difficulties on content content (53.70%), organization (65.19%), vocabulary (71.76%), language use (83.95%), and for the mechanics got (28.70%). The average ability of the students was 76.7, which was categorized as Good. Based on the research findings, it can be suggested for the students that have to practice continuously to improve their ability in writing narrative text. The teacher can also develop their teaching-learning activity by using appropriate and exciting teaching methods to be more comfortable and understandable.
