Abstract

Cultural hegemony is one of the issues that have occurred since the colonial to today. Unknowingly, many indigenous cultures in society have been lost and replaced by foreign cultures. It does not only happen in a community but also many literary works, including Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. This paper aims to analyze the cultural hegemony practiced by European colonizers against the Congolese in detail and comprehensively. It starts with colonialism, its impact on society that ends in cultural hegemony, the forms of cultural hegemonies, and the reaction of the Congolese. In analyzing the novel, the researcher uses qualitative methods with Antonio Gramsci's cultural hegemony. The paper shows that cultural hegemony in Congo does not arise by itself. The arrival of European colonizers to exploit ivory and control Congo caused them to act arbitrarily. They subtly dominate Congolese, which extends to culture or people's habits. It made Congolese imitate their culture, starting from fashion style, employment contract, and salary. They also created new cultures for the Congolese—a special midnight dance and a welcoming ceremony. The Congolese thought it was wrong, but they had no power to make resistance than just heeding the cultural hegemony.
