Abstract
This study aims to know students’ competencies of English word stress pronunciation to determine the factors that influenced students’ pronunciation of word stress. The subject was 7th grade students of SMP N 9 Semarang. The researcher chooses junior high school students because they have not learned about word stress pronunciation. The subject of this study is the 7th grade of 9 Junior High School Semarang. The main instruments employed for this study were: a. List of word stress in the table to know students’ competencies of English word stress and b. Interview questions to find out the factors that influence the students’ pronunciation of word stress. This study is a qualitative descriptive case study. The data collected through WhatsApp for students recording and Zoom Meeting for the interview. The final result of this research is the explanation of students’ word stress pronunciation and the factors influencing students’ pronunciation. There are the native language, age, exposure, phonetic ability, motivation, and background. The researcher found an effective way to teach English word stress pronunciation, there are learning through WhatsApp and Zoom Meeting, and Duo Lingo.
