Abstract

Translating legal texts is different from the other text because of its formal writing style and its complexity in grammatical structure. Translators need to pay attention to its formal style, messages, and grammatical aspects to avoid distortions of meanings. This study aimed to analyze the accuracy, the acceptability, and the readability of the complex clauses in the “International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights” (ICCPR) regulation by the United Nations that was translated from English (TL) into Indonesian (SL). The objects of this research were complex clauses found in the ICCPR regulation. This study focuses on the accuracy, acceptability and readability of the English-Indonesian translation of complex clauses found in the ICCPR regulation. This study applied a descriptive qualitative approach to describe the data. The theory of translation quality that was used in this study was Nababan’s theory using his translation quality instrument, consisting of three aspects; accuracy, acceptability and readability. The result showed that, in the accuracy aspect, 81.52% of the data were accurate, 18.21% of the data were less accurate, and no data was inaccurate. In the acceptability aspect, 62.72% of the data were acceptable, 35.49% was less acceptable, and 1.79% of the data were unacceptable. In the readability aspect, 67.72% of the data were readable, 24.38% of the data were less readable, and 7.90% of the data were unreadable. In conclusion, the accuracy level of the English-Indonesian translation of complex clauses in the ICCPR regulation was considered good. However, the acceptability and the readability of the complex clauses were still not quite good because the less acceptable and less readable translation of complex clauses was high which were 35.49% and 67.72%. Therefore, translators must be very careful in translating complex clauses considering the types of taxis.
