Abstract

This study analyzed the representation of friendship as reflected in Kate Seclsa‟s Fans of the Impossible Life. The aims of study were to know the concept of friendship and explain the representation of friendship. In addition, to find out the impact of friendship on the characters. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to identify any sign of friendship and the effects of friendship. The data were obtained by reading, identifying, inventorying, and interpreting using the theory of semiotics by Charles S. Pierce. The results of the study were, first, concepts of friendship, namely friendship of utility, pleasure, and virtue. Second, the representation of friendship which was described in several characteristics of friendship. They were enjoyment, acceptance, mutual assistance, trust, confiding, respect, understanding and spontaneousity. The third was related to the impact of friendship on adolescence. The positive effects of friendship, as illustrated in the novel, are getting ego support, feeling happy, encouraging self-development, being more productive, experiencing new things, and not feeling lonely. Then the negative impact of friendship was promiscuity. From this study, it was concluded that friendship is important, especially to develop a sense of self-worth and not being lonely.
