Abstract

In the cognitive linguistic view, metaphor was described as understanding one conceptual domain in terms of any other conceptual domain. This research has explored some metaphorical uses in Toni Morrison’s Beloved. This novel was written in 1987 by Toni Morrison, she started writing it after she read the real story of Margaret Garner. Toni Morrison used colors to symbolically represent a life complete with happiness, freedom, and safety, as well as involvement in community and family. The aim of this research was to describe the metaphors found in Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved. The data of this research were taken from the object of the research, Toni Morrison’s novel entitled “Beloved”. The research used a qualitative method that applied conceptual metaphor theory by Lakoff and Johson (1980). The data were collected by reading, taking notes, and identifying. From the data above, it was found that (1) the type of metaphors used in Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved tended to have metaphorical expressions. There were 4 of 8 metaphors categorized as structural metaphors, 2 for ontological metaphors, and 2 for oriental metaphors (2) the researcher found eight colors, they were white, black, red yellow, green, orange, gray and lavender, and pink. The results of this research showed that all domains of various color in Beloved are expressed of metaphors. Oriental and ontological metaphors have slight differences in terms of sum. The structural, however, has a gap compared to the first two metaphors. The conclusion of this research could be extra information in studying conceptual metaphor that focused on metaphor, types of metaphor, and metaphorical meaning. This research, which focused on the various color in Beloved, illustrated all color symbols from the perspective of conceptual metaphors and brought more information and inspiration for readers.
