Abstract

Throughout human history, traditional gender roles have frequently defined and constrained the opportunities and activities of women since numerous religious ideologies set certain restrictions on their behavior. In many nations, restrictions were loosened during the 20th century, allowing women to seek higher education and jobs other than those of housewives. The achievement of gender equality is feminism’s shared objective across its movement and ideology. The writer investigated the choice of women’s identity transformation in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight: Breaking Dawn. In the novel, the woman character showed how her identity had an impact on herself and those around her, who then transformed into a superior being according to her choice. The writer used a liberal feminist approach with the aim that women were free to choose their way of life and also used a qualitative descriptive approach that focused more on understanding the social phenomena of behavior and social life in Bella’s character. Then, a qualitative descriptive approach results in words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs. The result showed, Bella’s awareness of her identity as a woman, she had the right to use her bodily autonomy or done a things according to her own will such as being free to pursue higher education, chose to marry at the age of eighteen, maintained a human-vampire hybrid fetus while the people around her asked to abort it, being the strongest woman vampire, and protected her family from Volturi attack. The freedom of women’s rights in the public sphere seemed to open opportunities for women to contribute fairly as men did. Over time, more individuals got to know the existence of Bella’s strength and trusted her in dealing with the war. Women and men could not be treated equally without the confidence or support of those around them. As a result of educational equality, Bella was driven to improve her abilities in order to achieve her goals continually. Society already understood that women also had the right to participate in dominating the public sphere and were not only men who could be relied upon to guide good things in the future. However, granting Bella’s surroundings freedom was the same as freeing her right to live more eternally with the people she loves. Especially after Bella had been through so far and had made the people around her appreciate and treat women and men fairly.
