Abstract
Vanity has always become a part of human life. This study aims to explain vanity as the central conflict in the novel “The Winner Stands Alone” and describe the vanity of his trauma in the past that triggered his serial murders. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected trough the novel from the dialogue and statements of the characters. This study finds that human vanity does not appear without a cause. The emergence of vanity is triggered by several things such as love, material-oriented desires, and painful life experiences. This study concludes that the vanity that occurs in the main character is caused by a great desire for happiness about love that has experienced rejection, and terrible past trauma.
