Abstract
Adaptation was one of the many ways to make a movie. Usually, adaptations were done by taking sources from novels or story. In the process, the original source was used as a reference for the adapted work. Julia Kristeva's intertextual theory was used as a reference to analyse the process of adaptation from the novel to film. The analysis took into consideration the era in which these two works appeared and the events that occurred before or during the filming process. In the adaptation of Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep into the film The Big Lebowski, the Coen Brothers did not use the novel as the main reference but as an intertextual source for the film. This intertextual relationship did not only allows similarities between the two works of art but also gave the Coen Brothers a room to explore their movie. They turn The Big Sleep into different work of art in different media by adopting the era of which they made the movie, those influences are pacifist and feminist movement that flourished in the 80s and 90s, also the conservatism of American government embodied in one of the characters in the film. They combined all of that, until it formed into a film that has become a cult, The Big Sleep.
