Abstract

This study deals with analyzing types of cultural words in the subtitle of Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them movie, subtitling strategies used in the Indonesian subtitle of the movie and also discover its accuracy level. Newmark’s theory was applied to identify the cultural words, Gottlieb’s theory of subtitling strategies was applied in discovering the strategies in the subtitles; meanwhile, the accuracy was analyzed with Nababan’s theory of accuracy assessment. The subtitles analysis achieved by comparing the English and the Indonesian subtitle to find out the strategies applied by subtitler in translating the movie’s subtitle. In the analysis, there were three lecturers from English Department of Universitas Negeri Semarang that involved as the raters to discover the accuracy of the translated subtitles. The type of cultural words mostly found is ecology, followed by material, social and culture, organization, and the lowest score is gesture and habits. The subtitling strategies found in the subtitle are expansion (2 items, 5.12%), paraphase (3 items, 7.69%), transfer (10 items, 25.64%), imitation (18 items, 46.15%), transcription (0 items, 0.00%), dislocation (1 items, 2.57%), condensation(1 items, 2.57%), decimation (1 items, 2.57%), deletion (3 items, 5.26%), and resignation (0 items, 0.00%). In terms of accuracy the result shows that out of 38 data analyzed, there are 22 are unanimously rated with score 3, and 50% of the data are cosidered accurate by the three raters. This means that the Indonesian subtitle of The Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them is generally accurate.
