Abstract
Several factors have influenced the activity of writing English texts carried out by Indonesian students. These happen because of the gap between Indonesian and English; for example, students’ lack of English vocabulary mastery and linguistic problems. Based on this reason, students need an assisting tool to help them find English word/phrase. As today is a digital era, translation activities are also experiencing progress in computer-aided translation or machine translators (MT). It is also not an uncommon fact that some EFL students utilize MT in their English writing practice. Thus, this study aimed to determine the students' attitudes, perceptions, and teachers' responses related to the practice of using MT as an assisting tool in writing English texts. This research used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The data were taken from 36 students in 11th grade and 3 English teachers. The research found that most students used MT to assist them in writing English texts. They perceived that MT was practical to use even though some errors occurred. The teachers also said that MT was good to use as an assisting tool in writing English texts, but with some restriction so that no adverse effects would arise, which will later might affect students' habits.
