Abstract

This study aims to find out the different in the students’ vocabulary mastery between students taught with an English short movie and those without the short movie treatment and to find out the students’ perception of the use of English short movie to improve vocabulary mastery. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design. The participants were 60 in the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Tonjong. I used the pre-test, treatment, and post-test as the instruments to collect the data. The finding presents the mean scores of the pre-test in the experimental class was 62.27 and in the control class was 58.53, then the mean of the post-test in the experimental class was 77.08 and the control class was 69.08. The hypothesis test revealed the significant value was 0.003 < 0.05. Then, the tcount was 3.082 and the ttable was 2.0017, it means that tcount > ttable. The questionnaire revealed the positive perception of the students to the use of an English short movie to improve vocabulary mastery. So, there was a significant difference in the students’ vocabulary mastery between students taught using an English short movie and those without an English short movie. After watching this English short movie students feel very entertained, the movie was very interesting, feels motivated, did not make them bored, has good benefits, and can make students improve their vocabulary mastery. It is hoped that this study can be further developed by other researchers.
