Abstract

Modal verbs or Modality is one of the critical discussions in English grammar. It has become one of the most challenging aspects of learning English for students in the context of English as a Second Language or Foreign Language (ESL/EFL). This is because there may be so many meanings of a modal. Students often get confused about it, especially which or what form of the Modal to use. This research was conducted to find the best method between the video-based and traditional teaching methods to improve students' mastery of English modals. This study employed a quasi-experimental approach. The experimental and control groups carried out pretests, treatments, and post-tests. This study's population consisted of 8th-grade students of SMPN 4 Pemalang. It can be seen from the results of Paired Samples T-test findings the average of the control group is 63.40 for the pre-test and 72.10 for the post-test. In comparison, the experiment group is 68.71 for the pre-test and 81.78 for the post-test. The results indicate that the experimental group's pre-test score increased by 19.01%, while the control group's pre-test score increased by 13.74%. Both groups had a rise. However, the increase in the control group was not as significant as in the experimental group. It is concluded that Video-based learning improved students' mastery of English modals. Hopefully, this research can inspire and be developed for further research.
