Abstract

This study aims to investigate students' perceptions and challenges of the use of Google Classroom in the online English teaching and learning during the Covid-19 pandemic at SMA 1 Bawang, Banjarnegara in the Academic Year of 2022/2023. This research is a mixed-method study with Explanatory Sequential Design. Explanatory Sequential Design is data collection that begins with collecting quantitative data first, and then continues with qualitative data. The quantitative data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire to get data on students' perceptions; meanwhile, the qualitative data were collected through a semi-open questionnaire to get data on students' challenges. The close-ended questionnaire was adapted from Ridho et al. (2019). This study involved eleventh-grade students of IPS 4 SMA 1 Bawang, Banjarnegara. The closed-ended questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively using Descriptive Statistical Analysis to find the Mean. After that, the semi-open questionnaire was analyzed qualitatively by classifying and interpreting the students' answers. The results of the closed-ended questionnaire analysis showed that students have a positive perception of using Google Classroom with a Mean of 3.22. Students found that Google Classroom is easy to use as their expectation with a Mean of 3.33. In addition, it also found that students are comfortable with Google Classroom with e Mean of 3.1. However, the results of the semi-open questionnaire showed that students experienced some challenges. 70% of students reported poor internet connection, 40% of students revealed a lack of motivation and interest to take part in online learning, and 30% of students claimed difficulty in opening and uploading files in Google Classroom. Moreover, this study also revealed that Google Classroom notifications sometimes do not appear which sometimes causes students to be late in submitting assignments.
