Abstract

This study aims to find out how the eight-grade students of SMP Satu Atap Karangsambung, Kebumen in the Academic Year of 2021/2022 make meaning, in particular viewed from ideational meanings, in writing recount texts based on the topic provided by the teacher. This study applies descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study are 13 students’ recount texts. The data were then segmented into clauses. This study employed Transitivity by Halliday (1994) to analyze the data. Based on the analysis results, it was found 168 processes that were composed of five process types. Material occurred 108 times (79.41%), Behavioural occurred 15 times (11.03%), Mental occurred 4 times (3.94%), Verbal occurred 2 times (1.47%), and Relational occurred 7 times (5.15%). Material process becomes the most dominant process type, and Existential process was not found in the students’ recount. Moreover, it was found 167 participants that consist of 12 participant types. They are Actor which appeared 75 times (44.64%), Goal appeared 40 times (23.81%), Client appeared 3 times (1.79%), Initiator appeared 1 time (0.56), Senser appeared 3 times (1.79%), Phenomenon appeared 2 times (1.19%), Sayer appeared 1 time (1.56%), Receiver appeared 2 times (1.19%), Behaver appeared 9 times (5.36%), Range appeared 17 times (10.12%), Carrier appeared 7 times (4.17%), and Attribute appeared 8 times (4.76%). Thus, Actor eventually is the most dominant participant type that is involved in students’ recount texts. Last but not least, it was found 125 circumstances that include five circumstance types. Time came out 72 times (57.6%), Place came out 24 times (19.2%), Manner came out 2 times (1.6%), Cause came out 10 times (8%), and Accompaniment came out 17 times (13.6%). Consequently, Time turns to be the most dominant participant type, while Matter and Role were not found in students’ recount texts. Furthermore, each element was represented in various ways. Material process was realized dominantly by verbal group ‘pray’. Actor was realized dominantly by personal pronoun ‘I’. Time was realized dominantly by prepositional phrase ‘in the morning’ and time sequencer ‘after that’. Therefore, it can be concluded that when the eight-grade students of SMP Satu Atap Karangsambung, Kebumen in the Academic Year of 2021/2022 were asked to write recount texts based on the topic about holiday in Ramadhan, there is one activity which they carry out the most, that is pray. Then, they focus on themselves as the main character. Lastly, they have a tendency to do the activity in the morning. Not to mention, the use of time sequencer makes their recount texts coherent.
