Abstract

This study attempted to describe the subtitling strategies used in subtitling the utterances in “The Spongebob Movie Sponge on the Run” and its naturalness. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study aimed to analyze the subtitling strategy used by the subtitler, the naturalness level of the subtitles, and the relationship between them. Subtitling strategies classification proposed by Gottlieb was used to analyze the subtitling strategies. Meanwhile, the naturalness quality was analyzed by Nababan’s translation quality assessment. The result of this study revealed that there were 8 subtitling strategies used. The most dominant strategy used was paraphrase (39.34%), followed by transfer (30.32%), deletion (16.80%), imitation (5.32%), condensation (4.50%), expansion (2.45%), transcription (0.82%), and dislocation (0,41%). In terms of naturalness level, the rating done by 15 Indonesian respondents showed that 85.41% of the subtitles were categorized as natural, 12.19% were not quite natural and 2.40% were unnatural. Imitation has resulted the highest percentage of natural subtitles in this study. Overall, it was found out that the Indonesian subtitles of The Spongebob Movie Sponge on the Run were mostly natural.
