Abstract

This research was motivated by the phenomenon of low literacy culture in Indonesian society. A program encouraging students to read is the first step toward instilling a reading culture in children. Madrasah (Islamic School) plays a significant role in building a reading community as a formal learning environment. This study aimed to determine the School Literacy Movement (GLS) was implemented at MI Darul Ulum, Wates, Semarang City, and to find out what students thought about the School Literacy Movement's implementation to help students develop reading habits. A descriptive qualitative design with a case study design was used in this research. The principal, three instructors, and 109 students participated in this study. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. The steps of data reduction, data display, and conclusion were used in data analysis methods. The study results indicated that students' reading habits remained poor because they were hampered for two years by the Covid-19 pandemic. Because the literacy program had been interrupted, the previously planned literacy activities could not be carried out completely. Furthermore, the literacy program's buildings and infrastructure were harmed due to a lack of maintenance. The only scheduled duties that may be fulfilled were SMS (Sabtu Membaca Senyap) and regular visits to the school library. According to this study, literacy programs must be held extensively or regularly. To improve students' reading habits, there is also a need for literacy program innovation or renewal and infrastructure to support the operation of literacy programs.
