Abstract
This study focuses on English Department Students‟ Anxiety to Comprehend Reading Material in Online Classes during COVID-19. The objectives of the study were to explain whether English Department students are experiencing reading anxiety in online classes during COVID-19 in Indonesia; the sources of English department students‟ anxiety to comprehend reading material in online classes during COVID-19 pandemic; and how students overcome their anxiety to comprehend reading material in online classes during COVID-19 pandemic. The research was a qualitative case study. The participants of this research were English Department students majoring in Education Year 2020/2021, of which there were 51 in total. The instruments for collecting the data were the questionnaire and interview. The findings showed that English department students are experiencing reading anxiety in online classes during COVID-19 in Indonesia.Considering the findings revealed, there were a number of students who still had a hard time understanding the reading material, dealing with their reading anxiety, and following online classes during COVID-19. In addition, based on the findings, students‟ anxiety in comprehending reading material in online classes during COVID-19 comes from many sources, such as the lack of vocabulary; the complex, long, and unfamiliar topic of the text; running out of time during the reading session; and understanding the material from lecturers in the reading comprehension class. In order to overcome their reading anxiety and improve their reading ability, students used several reading strategies and built regular habits. The lecturers are supposed to make sure that all students have understood the whole text or not, observe the students‟ situation and help them deal with their learning problems.
