Abstract

This study aims to identify what is the realization of Attitudes from the character of Miguel from the movie Coco and to analyze what Miguel’s personality is based on the Attitude found. The Attitude of Appraisal System proposed by Martin & White (2005), involves three semantic values that are referred to as emotion, ethics, and aesthetics. By using Discourse analysis, the data which are in the form of script from Miguel’s utterances were analyzed in Table of appraising items, exclusively in Attitude s namely Affect, Judgment, and Appreciation. The utterances include words, phrases, and clauses. Several methods were done in order to analyze the data; including screening, listing, and identifying. The findings map out the higher use of Capacity in Judgment, Happiness in Affect, and Valuation in Appreciation. The high occurrence of Capacity in Judgment indicates that the character is more personal and emotional, Happiness indicates the emphasizing of character development, and Valuation shows that the character is appreciative.
