Abstract

Flood is an annual problem in Indonesia that has economic, social and environmental impacts. One of the structural measures in the flood control is to construct levee. During the levee construction phase, the geotechnical problem that arises is the increase in pore water pressure when the levee sit on saturated clay. To prevent the slope of levee become unstable during construction phase, the stability of levee should be predicted during design. The B-bar method combined with the slope stability analysis could be used to predict the excess pore water pressure and the realistic safety factor. The results show that the slope stability analysis without considering the increase in pore water pressure causes a relatively larger safety factor, hence giving incorrect results. In addition, by considering the excess pore pressure, the stability of levee that sit on saturated soft clay become critical during the construction phase.
