Abstract

This research was conducted to identify the use of translation methods used by translator in translating Soul film subtitles from English to Indonesian. A qualitative approach is used in this study to describe the aims of this study, since the data in this study are in the form of words, phrases and sentences. The research data was taken from the translation of the subtitles of the film Soul by Nazaret Budi, there were 1146 dialogue sentences taken from the film subtitles. The researcher analyzed the data by marking and grouping sentences according to the translation method used. The theory of the translation method which is the basis of this research is Newmark's theory of translation. The results of this study indicate that the most widely used translation method is the free translation method with 437 data, 323 data communicative translation, 138 data using word for word translation, 119 data using literal translation, 57 data using faithful translation, 39 data idiomatic translation, 25 data semantic translation, 9 data found using adaptation translation.
