Abstract

Identity is avery important issue in human life. It is often faced by the people in all societies, especially for those who move and then settlefrom one region to another region, even from one country to another. They migrate from their home country into another more developed country and settle in there in order to get better jobs, educations, or finding for refuges. Then, one of the consequences of migration is the emergence of identity problems that will certainly be experienced within them. As the story in the novel by Mitali Perkins called You Bring The Distant Near, we can see how a migrant family were facing their new environments and new cultures in their new place they lived in. Migrating from one country to another, and facing new environment and society, made those migrants in confusion and indecision about their identity between continuing and maintaining the original identity they brought from India, or making new identity in the place they lived. Through Cultural Studies perspective using Stuart Hall’s Identity and Diaspora theory, this study tries to capture the deeper alternative meaning of identity in the story of migrant family in the Mitali Perkins’ You Bring The Distant Near. This research explores how migrants negotiate their identities in a new cultural context and how their sense of belonging is affected by dislocation. The result shows that after the migrants migrate, they experience problems with their identity and dislocation. Then, from these problems, they are creating hybrid culture and new habits in themselves when living their daily lives in the new place they live
