Abstract

The objectives of this study were to (1) To find out students' perceptions of using social media and Instagram to teach speaking skills. This research is conducted on the basis of students’ perception based on need analysis by Hutchinson and Water. This study used qualitative method to measure students’ perception on the use of social media Instagram in teaching speaking skill. Besides, need analysis, observation, interviews, and documentation were used to collect data. The results concluded that students perceive using social media Instagram positively in speaking learning. It is showed by the percentage of students’ wants (Instagram as learning media 83.33%. They state that social media, Instagram very contemporary and suitable for their age. Besides, students approved that making videos, creates challenges for them in fluency, vocabulary, confidence, and accents that need to be corrected. It is showed by the percentage of lacks which contain 40% of vocabularies and 30% of fluency. Reason behind the teacher’s consideration choosing Instagram to teach speaking due to it is provide a new way for students to learn to speak critically, but it also helps students reflect on modern and meaningful learning. Instagram has many features where users can share their stories through Insta stories and feeds, upload photos, comment, create stories, and go live. However, SMAN 3 Pati has succeeded in combining elements of technology-based learning that are adapted to the current state of students, and students like learning speaking through Instagram.
