Abstract

Interpersonal Metafunction of a speech not only refers to the way speakers and audiences interact and establish and maintain the relations among them, but also means to influence their behaviors and to express our opinions about the world around us. This research reveals the analysis of the mood realization, modality realization, the relation between mood and modality in Donald Trump’s 2020 speeches, and the conceptual application of the findings toward English Language Teaching. This research employs qualitative descriptive since the data are in the form of words from transcripts of Donald Trump’s 2020 speeches. The result shows that mood type mostly used by Donald Trump is declarative. It implied that he tried to give American information as many as possible. In modality, Donald Trump mostly used the median degree of Inclination. It indicated that his ability to protect American people was not strong enough at the time since he and his people still learned the virus and they had not provided vaccines. In mood and modality relationship, it was found four interpersonal meanings. They are the seriousness of the situation and prevention act, commitment, and empathy and encouragement. Further, the conceptual application of the findings toward English Language Teaching concluded that mood and modality is very useful in teaching writing because it can help students to produce a good text and give them understanding and knowledge about grammatical features of Mood and modality so that they can deliver meaning properly in a text.
