Abstract

This research aims to explain the use of translation methods in the English-Indonesian translation of figurative language, to explain the naturalness in the English-Indonesian translation of the figurative language, and to explain the relationship between the naturalness in the English-Indonesian translation of the figurative language in the novel "The Trials of Apollo: The Hidden Oracle" and the translation methods. The researcher collected words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that used figurative language to collect information. A theory proposed by Leech (1969) is used as the main theory in this study. Then, figurative language in ‘The Trials of Apollo: The Hidden Oracle’ is examined using the translation methods theory offered by Newmark (1988), and the naturalness of translation by using Larson (1998) was used in the analysis of the data, which was done using the content analysis technique. There were 9 personifications, 17 metaphors, 15 similes, 3 metonymies, 14 hyperboles, 2 synecdoche, 1 allegory, 4 symbolisms, and 1 litotes, according to an analysis of the figurative language data from "The Trials of Apollo: The Hidden Oracle." The results of the study show that while translating figurative language from English into Indonesian, all eight translation methods suggested by Newmark were used. They consist of 3 word-for-word, 9 literal 12 semantic, 2 faithful, 1 adaptation, 26 free translations, 2 idiomatic, and 11 communicative translations. The analysis's results show that free translation is the most common method used to translate the novel. based on the most frequent translation methods used to translate the novel because the translator wants to make sure that the language and content of the translated text are appropriate for and understandable by readers of the target language (Indonesian). The novel made it very evident that the translation was done in a highly natural way. This shows that the translator was effective in making the language accessible, understood who the original work's target audience was, and managed to hide the fact that the text was being translated entirely from the readers. The author advised translators to attempt to comprehend the meaning of figurative language before translating it, and if they were unable to do so in the target language, they should have translated it based on the meaning. Other researchers also recommended looking into how translation methods affect other translation-specific aspects like accuracy, acceptability, and readability.
