Abstract

Indonesian students have difficulties learning English pronunciation. This phenomenon might be caused by the absence of some English sounds in their native language and the limitation of knowledge since English was learned as their foreign language. In accordance with the occurrence stated, this qualitative research aimed to analyse of the pronunciation error of English fricative consonants among senior high school students. This research aimedto find out the students' pronunciation errors in pronouncing consonants /ð/ and /θ/and to find out the causes of students' pronunciation errors. The subject of this research was a hundred eleventh-grade students of SMA N 10 Semarang. The pronunciation test and interview guideline were used as the data collection instruments and were collected by audio recording. According to the data, the researcher found that the dominant error that appeared was the/θ/ sound with 79.3%. Meanwhile, the error of the/ð/ sound had a percentage of 50.3%. Moreover, the /ð/ sound was substituted into /d/ in all positions, excluding the word though, which was perceived as [tɒʊ], whereas /θ/ was substituted into /t/ in all positions. Additionally, the factors supporting the students' pronunciation errors were interference errors, intralingual error, and developmental error.
