Abstract

Many companies are experiencing financial difficulties in recent years caused by various factors both financial and non financial. Financial distress is characterized by a decrease in profits over the last few years and the company's inability to fulfill its obligations when they due. This study aims to analyze the effect of institutional ownership, leverage, liquidity, and firm size on financial distress in transportation sub-sector companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2017-2020. The population of this study is all transportation sub-sector companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) reaching the number of 46 companies. The study employed a purposive sampling technique which resulted in 93 units of analysis from 25 companies. Multiple regression analysis was used as a data analysis technique. The study found that leverage and firm size had a positive effect on financial distress. Meanwhile, liquidity has a negative effect, and institutional ownership do not effect. Transportation sub-sector companies are expected not to increase their debt and company size because this has proven to be prone to causing bankrupty. In the future, the company can increase liquidity to avoid financial distress. In future research can add to the differences in the company’s financial distress conditions before, during, and after Covid-19 pandemic.
