Abstract
Cultural-specific items are items in the form of words or phrases that contain cultural elements from the source language. One of the famous horror novel series by Jonathan Stroud is Lockwood and Co. “The Screaming Staircase.” This novel takes the background of the city of London, England, which tells the story of a massive ghost plague that occurred there. The novel contains interesting cases related to the translation of culture-bound words. This study aims to categorize the culture-bound words found in Lockwood and Co. “The Screaming Staircase,” and to illustrate the way the translator translates the culture-bound words in Into Indonesian. This study is qualitative research. The data in this study were taken from the object of the study, Jonathan Stroud’s Lockwood and Co. “The Screaming Staircase”. The data were collected by reading, coding, identifying, and classifying. In analyzing the data the author used culture-bound words classification by Newmark, and translation strategies by Pedersen. The result of the study found that there was 98 data in the form of culture-bound words. There were found five kinds of CSI they are Ecology with 19 (19.4%), material culture with 60 (61.2%), social culture with 4 (4%), organization with 12 (12.2%), and gesture and habits with 3 (3.1%). And from 98 data found, the translator use retention with 31.6% in retention complete and 11.2% in TL adjust. Direct translation with 18.4% in calque and 6.1% in shifted, cultural substitution has 13.3% data, paraphrase with 6.1% data, specification with 6.1% data, generalization with 3.1% data, and omission have the least amount of data, that is 1% data.
