Abstract

This research analyzed the thematic role in news titles of Kompas.id and NBC News. This issue is important because news title is the first thing that reader see when they want to read the news. The fact that the readers only read the title without understand the meaning that the journalist conveyed. In the end, the thematic role helps readers to understand the sentence‘s meaning in the title and finally, they can grasp the message in a text. This research aims to identify the thematic role that exists in titles on Kompas.id and NBC News, identify the existence of thematic roles in constructing the sentences' meaning, and explain the difference and similarity between thematic roles in NBC and Kompas.id. By applying O‘Grady‘s theory of a thematic role which focuses on Noun phrases. This research employed a qualitative research design and the data were twenty�five titles taken from Russia and Ukraine War in Kompas.id and NBC News. The results obtained in this study are 137 roles on Kompas.id and NBC News. The roles found in this research are, agent, theme location, stimulus, beneficiary, goal, source, instrument, and time. Meanwhile, the thematic role constructs the sentence‘s meaning in news titles by observing the verb and the preposition used in the sentence. The similarities found are the role that is most commonly found is an agent (31 times of 137) and both only have one role ―source‖ and did not have experiencer. The researcher found the difference in this research is that on NBC News there is no role of stimulus and at Kompas.id, the researcher did not find role time. The thematic role is a way to describe the role of noun phrases in a sentence so that the thematic role is closely related to the grammatical function.
