Abstract

This study aims to find students' responses of podcasts as an alternative media to promote critical thinking in a listening class. Studies related to the use of podcasts for listening still focus on research that explores the effectiveness of podcasts for listening. Still, there have been no studies that have discussed student responses. The participants of this study were fourth-semester students of the English language department at the Faculty of Language and Arts of Semarang State University. Researchers used a qualitative descriptive study, by using questionnaires and interviews as instruments to collect data. The findings show that students have a positive response to using podcasts as an alternative media to promote their critical thinking abilities in listening class. Moreover, almost all the student prefers using a podcast as their media for the learning process. Students believed podcast-based listening was very impactful and helpful in promoting their critical thinking abilities in listening skills. However, there were 5 major challenges found through the interview. The challenges were related to lack of vocabulary, lack of concentration, lack of motivation, accent of native speaker, length and speed of the podcast.
