Abstract
WhatsApp is a widely used application because it is one of the media that can link teachers and students to communicate and support the teaching and learning process. In the learning process, appropriate instructional strategies are essential. It must be created between teachers and students because it is related to approaches to managing instructional content and operations comprehensively to achieve one or a group of instructional goals. This study aimed to determine: (1) the student’s perceptions about WhatsApp as a media in English language learning. (2) the student’s perceptions of the instructional strategies used in WhatsApp as a media in English language learning, and (3) the uses of instructional strategies applied in WhatsApp for students’ English learning. This study used a mixed-method research design, and 56 students were involved as participants. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires and interviews. The data analysis method in this research uses descriptive statistics for data obtained from questionnaires and using descriptive analysis on interviews. The study found that students positively perceive WhatsApp as a media for English language learning. Learned English through WhatsApp and used instructional strategies also raised good perceptions from students. Students’ responses indicated that they felt enthusiastic and comfortable when the teacher used various instructional strategies. The use of instructional strategies applied via WhatsApp provided good results for student learning outcomes. Each language skill they have can develop significantly, affecting student motivation in learning English.
