Abstract

Japanese society is still influenced by Confucianism which establishes a patriarchal society although modernization has changed some aspects of the way people live. The patriarchal society makes gender role expectations related to marriage, a normal family, and employment that are expected to be fulfilled by Japanese people. The society’s expectations above become the rule of normality that is strengthened by the Japanese culture. This study is a descriptive qualitative research that used the Structuralism theory by Levi-Strauss. By using the Levi-Strauss’ structuralism theory, the analysis of this study will be conducted through binary oppositions found in the novel. The objectives of this study are 1) to explain the structure of normality and abnormality is described in the novel Convenience Store Woman. 2) to describe how the strength of Japanese society towards normalities is represented in the novel Convenience Store Woman. This study results in several findings as follows: structurally, Sayaka Murata’s Convenience Store Woman novel illustrated the normality and abnormality in Japanese society which is still a patriarchal society and establishes gender role expectations Japanese people should follow. Then, it also can be seen the way Japanese society sees the abnormal behaviours in society related to marriage, family and regular employment portrayed by the characters in Sayaka Murata’s Convenience Store Woman novel. The last result is, this study shows that the Japanese culture strengthens the society’s expectations towards normalities represented in the novel. The inability to fulfil the rules and expectations mentioned above, Japanese people will be considered as misfit, abnormal people in the society.
