Abstract

This study focuses on the deviation of Google Translate in rendering the meaning of the text. This study aims to explain the deviation of Google Translate in rendering the meaning of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and idiomatic expressions in CNN news items. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method. The data was obtained by using the purposive sampling technique. The data in this research were two news items taken from CNN News. This study found the deviation in referential meaning, grammatical meaning, and contextual meaning in words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and idiomatic expressions. Google Translate mostly does deviate in rendering the grammatical meaning and contextual meaning of the text. Google Translate can’t render the meaning of the text well. This research proved that Google Translate couldn’t produce a good translation product. In translation, humans still took a crucial role. It concluded that Google Translate couldn’t translate well in terms of grammatical and contextual meaning.
