Abstract

This research investigated the attitude system of the utterances taken from the conversations between the main character, Eep and her interlocutors in the movie “The Croods: A New Age” using appraisal theory by Martin and White (2005). Then the result of the attitude analysis were related to the theory by Linda Eyre and Richard Eyre (1993) to find the moral values realized in the utterances. This research was a discourse analysis which refer to qualitative research. The finding showed that appreciation frequently appeared in the utterances. Whereas the moral value analysis showed that the value of honesty, courage, peace ability, self-confident and potential, loyalty and dependability, respect, love and affection, unselfishness and sensitivity, kindness and friendliness appeared in the chosen utterances, where honesty was appeared mostly. Moral values realised is correlated with character education in Curriculum 2013 in order to building students’ characters. By applying the appraising items in teaching and learning, hopefully it can help students not only to increase their vocabularies but also to understand the utility and placement of the words according to the topic of the sentences the encountered or made which may improve their linguistic awareness. Hopefully teacher can also use movie to build students’ characters through moral values that are realised
