Abstract
This research analyzed the interpersonal meaning realized in Sir Alex Ferguson’s farewell speech. The objectives of this research were to find out what kind of interpersonal meaning that was shown by Sir Alex Ferguson in his speech. This research used qualitative research approach. The data source came from the speech on May, 2013 on Sir Alex Ferguson last day as the manager of Manchester United Football Club. It was interesting to analyze the football coach’s speech, while some other researchers analyzed the political person’s. The analysis was conducted by segmenting the speech into clauses. The data were analyzed based on Mood and Modality under the theory of Halliday (1985). The findings indicated that Sir Alex Ferguson mostly used declarative clauses in conveying his idea in the speech, he wanted to share his feelings towards the club who had been with him for 27 years. Thus, he frequently used “I” as the subject, it shows that he is the one who was responsible for the speech and signaled how thankful he was to everyone in the club. Furthermore, though he was the legend at the club he frequently used “would” in the speech, it shows a kind of politeness in the speech, and also the modality that was realized in the speech indicated his plan after retirement.
