Abstract
European women migrated to Java since the 18th century, but in Magelang, European women began to live in this area a lot since the early 20th century. This is due to the existence of a development program that brought Europeans to come and improve the urban structure in a more modern direction. This migration encourages the emergence of interactions between Javanese Elite Women and European Mistresses such as lifestyle. The strategic area of Magelang and had an important role during the colonial administration, namely as the area of the Kedu Residency Government, caused many European residents to come to work in government and private offices. The development of the city's infrastructure is quite complete, thus giving an illustration that at that time Magelang had become a modern city. This study uses the historical method with the first stage of conducting a source search, where the primary source is used as the main reference. Primary sources are obtained by tracing contemporary archives. As found in Binnenland Bestuur, Magelang Middelpunt van den Tuin van Java, and Begrooting van Uitgaven en Ontvangsten van de Gemeente Magelang obtained from ANRI. Several contemporary newspapers and magazines were also used as sources such as De Courant, De Locomotief, De Indische Courant, and Maanblad Vereeniging van Huisvrowen which were obtained from the National Library. The results of the study show that in Magelang City, Javanese elite women and European ladies have a relationship in carrying out their daily lives, one of which can be seen in the imitation of clothing that occurs between the two. This is influenced by the emergence of modernity among Javanese elite women that European clothing is a modern symbol. Meanwhile, European ladies use kebaya and jarit as a form of interest in the clothes worn by Javanese elite women.
