Abstract

The development of the furniture industry in Jepara Regency is considered fast. The large number of buyers and workers make it one of the economic drivers in Jepara. The pace of the furniture industry in Jepara, especially in Mlonggo District in 1997-2004 is quite interesting to study. The aims of this research include (1) Knowing the development of the wooden furniture industry in Mlonggo District in 1997-1999, (2) Knowing the effect of the raw material crisis on the wooden furniture industry in Mlonggo District in 2000-2004, (3) Knowing the social - economy conditions of the wooden furniture industry in Mlonggo District in 1997-2004. The research method used in this research is the historical research method. The historical research method is a process for critically reviewing and testing the object of research. The aim is to ensure the truth of the object studied. The first step taken after determining the object of research is the collection of sources or called heuristics. The next step is data analysis with source criticism, both external criticism and internal criticism, followed by the interpretation of the data. The final stage is done by historiography or data presentation in form of writing. The results showed that: (1) The development of the wood furniture industry in Mlonggo District in 1997-1999 running fastly. This is indicated by several supporting factors. (2) The crisis of wood raw materials that occurred in 2000- 2004 was quite influential to the furniture industry process. The scarcity of the raw materials and the price increases are unavoidable, thus impacting to the furniture production. (3) The furniture industry plays a role in influencing the socio-economic conditions of the surrounding community. Both positive influences such as rising people's living standards, as well as negative ones such as the emergence of deviations from social norms.
