Abstract

The main objective of the research is to explain the social criticism of Vitaa and Slimane‟s song lyrics, and to discover the social context that provokes the social criticism in these song lyrics. This study belongs to qualitative research, which specifically examines the songs of Vitaa and Slimane. This study uses a deductive approach. The data in this study are the lyrics of songs suspected of containing messages of social criticism, and statements and interview transcriptions by Vitaa and Slimane which set out the context for the emergence of social criticism in Maelys, Pas Beaux, and Comme Un Film. To analyze the data, the method used is the linguistic contextual method (to analyze the content semantically) and the non-linguistic contextual method (to analyze the content in a pragmatic way). Based on the analysis of the data, there are three forms of social criticism, includes social criticism relating to morals, social criticism relating to gender, and social criticism relating to technology. The research results indicate that there is a situational equivalence between social conditions in France and the content of the three songs. The social context that causes social criticism in all three songs is the murder in the song Maelys, gender identification and body shaming in the song Pas Beaux, and the negative side of digitization in the song Comme Un Film.
