Abstract

The phenomenon of oppression has become a culture in our society since long time ago. Pick up any newspapers or tune in to any newscast on television and you will undoubtedly see or hear at least a few items concerning the advantages of some and the oppression of many in the world, whether it be class inequality, gender-related cases or racial/ethnic issues. Thus, sorts of actions should be done to resist against those oppression. In the development of literature, the idea of oppression and resistance eventually emerged into literary works, especially those of poems. This study explored Maya Angelou’s Still I Rise poem. Still I Rise presents the bold defiance of the speaker, implied to be a black woman, in the face of oppression. Thus, this study aimed to discover how the idea of resistance to oppression is being expressed in the poem. This study used a descriptive qualitative design by applying Riffaterre’s semiotics of poetry. The data were collected through heuristic reading and analyzed through hermeneutic reading. The findings of this study showed that the idea of resistance to oppression in Still I Rise poem is being expressed through the use of indirect expression, matrix, and hypogram
