Abstract

Strength and power have always been a dream in human life in the world. It is often associated with male stereotypes, It giving rise to the term masculinity. In 1972, the model of masculinity with muscle-strength brains showed in wars, fights, and firearms through the famous movie The Godfather. The story, adapted from the novel of the same title, became part of the success of the Hollywood film industry. The harshness of life in rivalry, group loyalty, the struggle of family honor, betrayal, and revenge depicted in the story resulted in typical masculinity contributing to American geopolitics of the era. Towards the 21st century, the third sequel to The Godfather 3 story was released with some notable changes to the image of masculinity, among others with the hero’s disclaimer of dark businesses and brutal violence. Through Roland Barthes' semiotic theory within the global era and cosmopolitan values, this study tries to capture an alternative meaning of the signs behind the shift of masculinity in the story adaptation in The Godfather 3 movie. The result shows that the alternation is closely related to the American demand for a new identity. No longer limited to only looking at one element of strength, but also has the right to choose an alternative strength that is more acceptable. The story is made to fulfill the demand of the global era of a more peaceful life and cosmopolitan values of togetherness, equality, respect, and tolerance.
