Abstract

Gender and racial discrimination are two injustices that continue to occur in our society around the world. This paper used American history to illustrate gender and racial inequality, and The Help by Kathryn Stockett is the perfect novel represent it. Racial segregation exists in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960s, and this novel illustrates the lives of African-American women working as maids or housekeepers. This paper also intends to address feminist propaganda triggered by gender inequality. This research employs a qualitative approach. Then, the data analysis method is based on the novel's conflicts between white and black characters, as well as women and men characters. The Help demonstrates that prejudice against African-American women stems from the opposition caused by racial discrimination which are the superior and inferior, gender discrimination, and class oppression. The major issue that the researcher wanted to address is the lives of African-American women who lived in the United States and served as servants for white people during the 1960s, when women and colored people were still treated unfairly.
