Abstract
Communication is the act of transferring information from one person to another through a language. To avoid misunderstandings in communication, understanding each other is also really needed. Sometimes the speaker conveys the meaning indirectly or what is commonly referred to as indirect speech. This study aimed at: 1) To find out the possible intended meanings of indirect speech acts used by teacher in online English teaching. 2) To find out the structural form and the function of each indirect speech act used by teacher in online English teaching. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this study was an English teacher at MAN Salatiga. The participants were students of language class at twelfth grade (XII Bahasa) of MAN Salatiga in the academic year of 2020/2021. The object of this study was the teacher’s indirect speech acts on online English teaching. The data were collected based on the instrument such as observation and documentation. The observation conducted via Zoom Meeting online class. Researcher classified the structural form and functions of indirect speech acts based on the Yule’s theories. The findings of this study showed that, 1) There were 32 indirect speech acts which have possible intended meanings used by teacher in online English teaching. 2) There were three structural forms found in this research such as declarative, interrogative, and imperative sentences. The functions were to statements, questions, and commands/requests. The 32 utterances (100%) were divided into 10 declarative sentences (31.3%), 13 interrogative sentences (40.6%), and 9 imperative sentences (28.1%).
