Abstract
Speaking anxiety is a common factor that influences foreign language learning. This study aims to identify factors that cause foreign language anxiety in speaking to native speakers. This research employed case study qualitative method by using online survey and interview techniques to collect the data. There are 33 closed�ended questions that modification from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCAS) by Horwitz, et al. (1986) and two open-ended questions for the interview. Twenty five students of semester II in English Department, Universitas Negeri Semarang were selected randomly as respondents of this research. Before collecting the data, respondents were given the experience to have a conversation with a native speaker in an online mode. The results demonstrate that the major factors that cause English speaking anxiety to a native speaker are fear of negative evaluation with 71% followed by communication apprehension with 68.4%, and test anxiety with 66.6%. Despite the anxiety, the respondents were excited and enthusiastic when having a conversation with a native speaker. This is because getting experience to speak with a native speaker is a rare chance. Therefore, this activity may used to improve students’ motivation to speak English.
