Abstract

This study analyzed the translation of acronyms, initialisms, and abbreviations taken from an Indonesian novel entitled Laskar Pelangi written by Andrea Hirata that will be compared with its english translation novel,The Rainbow Troops which translated by Angie Kilbane. The objective of the study is to find out the translation procedure used by the translator to translate Indonesian acronyms, initialisms, and abbreviations into English. The object of the study is Laskar Pelangi novel and The Rainbow Troops novel. The data are the acronyms, initialisms, and abbreviations found in both novels. In anayzing the data, the translation procedures stated by Newmark were used. This research found that from 32 acronyms, initialism, and abbreviation found in the novel, there are 8 of them used transference procedure 6 (18,75 %), 13 of them used through�translation procedure ( 40,625 %), 6 data used recognise translation procedure ( 18,75 %), 1 data used shift or transposition (3,125 %), 2 data translated using synonymy procedure (6,25 %), and 4 data translated using descriptive translation (12,5 %). According to the result of the translation analysis, the most applied translation procedure used by Angie Kilbane to translate acronyms, initialisms, and abbreviation in The Rainbow Troops novel is through translation.
