Abstract

The problems in translating in which there is a difference in grammatical structure can be solved with transposition. The main purpose of transposition is to changes the form of a sentence but the meaning stays the same. The purpose of this study is to investigate how transpositions occur in Joker Movie. The data are taken from the direct speeches or subtitles of the movie and analyzed based on Catford’s theory of transposition (1965). This study is classified as a Qualitative study. The methods of investigation including the process of collecting, analyzing, and describing the data. The data are taken and collected by reading, inventorying, and classifying them according to the types of transposition. They are then analyzed and presented with a detailed explanation. 172 transpositions occur in this research which covers all types of transposition. The structure shift was the most frequent type of transposition in the subtitle of Joker Movie with 54 data (31.3%), followed by both Level Shift and Unit Shift with 35 data (20.3%). Intra-system shift with 28 data (16.2%) and Class Shift with 20 data (11.6).
