Abstract

The textbook is one of the resources for students to learn. The teacher needs to select and identify the strengths and weaknesses of some textbook that already in use. The teacher can choose the correct textbook for teaching. Pragmatic content of Indonesian English Textbook is important to be analyzed to know the quality of the English textbook in Indonesia, is appropriate or not for an English teacher to teach. This study aims to describe the type and frequencies of request and offering speech act used in ESPS English for SMA/MA Grade XII and Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas 12 edisi Revisi 2018. This study is qualitative research. The data were collected by reading, coding, identifying and classifying. In analyzing the data, the researcher used request speech act theory by Blum-Kulka, House, & Kasper (1989) and the offering speech act theory by Searle (1979). This study shows that there are three types of request speech act strategies presented in ESPS English for SMA/MA Grade XII and Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas 12 edisi Revisi 2018. They are Query Preparatory strategies, Obligation Statement strategies, and Mood Derivable strategies. Then, the most often strategy used was preparatory. There are three types of offering strategies presented in ESPS English for SMA/MA Grade XII and Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas 12 edisi Revisi 2018. They are The Propositional Condition, The Preparatory Condition and The Sincerity Condition. The most often strategy used was a preparatory condition.
