Abstract

The diaspora phenomenon brings impact to the diaspora people. The impact of the diaspora can be seen through the story of Crazy Rich Asians' novel. The study represents the impact of the diaspora to the characters of the novel. The research objectives are divided into three, which are 1) to define the kind of Chinese behavior that the characters portray, 2) to explain the impact of the diaspora on the characters’ of Chinese behavior living in the different cultural backgrounds from the characters of the story, 3) to explain the reason why the diaspora of Chinese behavior result in building the social identity of the characters. The object of the research is the novel entitled Crazy Rich Asians that was written by Kevin Kwan. The analysis uses observation through reading the story closely and collecting the data through literary work research. The research is descriptive qualitative. The research theory uses Stuart Hall’s theory about being and becoming. Then to support Stuart Hall’s theory, the researcher uses deconstruction theory’s by Jacques Derrida. The impact can be seen through the type of Chinese, the behavior from each character, and the behavior for building the identity. The research found three findings. Those findings are 1) The type of Chinese behavior of the characters in the novel perform as the impact of the cultural diaspora, 2) the diaspora impacts on Chinese behavior’s living in different cultural backgrounds, and 3) the diaspora of Chinese behavior builds the major of social identity from the characters. The impact of the diaspora on the characters can influence how the characters behave to others. The impact is not only on the characters living but also on their culture and identity. The impact of the diaspora can be seen through the characters' interaction and their behavior toward other characters. In conclusion, diaspora impact can influence the character's story and change what the characters followed since their childhood. The impact can be seen through the characters' behavior and thinking. The impact becomes merging with the native culture of the characters. This can prove the change of how behavior and way of life of Chinese figures because of the different places they live. That brings a big impact on the characters' life.
