Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of the Bangka Malay dialect on students' English pronunciation. This research uses a qualitative method. The subject is the ninth-grade students in SMP N 1 Payung in the academic year 2020/2021 in the second semester. The location of the research is SMPN 1 Payung. In the data collection, the researcher uses pronunciation tests, questionnaires, and interviews. The data shows that students still have difficulty pronouncing English consonants sound [f], [v], [θ], [ð], [s], [z], [ʃ], [ʒ], [k], [j], [tʃ] and [dʒ].The data were 24 words in which the students had difficulty pronounced English consonants from the total of English words 48. The results of this research show that the students have a high percentage in pronouncing the word incorrectly. The Bangka Malay dialect also influences students’ English Pronunciation. There were pronunciation, students' first language and students' mistakes. The factor impacting students English pronunciation were self-confidence, the lack of practice, and students' lack of vocabulary.
