Abstract

The aim of the study is to find out the character education values represented in an English movie entitled Inside Out based on the students’ perception. A descriptive qualitative method is used in the process of analysis. The data were collected through open and close question in the questionnaire and interview. The subject of this study are 21 students of the eleventh-grade IPS 3 at SMA YSKI Semarang in the academic year of 2019/2020. The result of the data analysis showed that there are 18 characters education values that are found in the Inside Out movie based on the students’ perception. They are religiosity, honesty, tolerance, discipline, hardworking, creativity, independence, democracy, curiosity, nationalism, patriotism, appreciation of achievement, friendship, love of peace, reading interest, environmental awareness, social awareness, and responsibility. From those 18 characters, hard working, creativity, independent, friendship and responsibility characters are the most dominant with a percentage of 100%. Meanwhile, democracy character stands in the lowest position with only 71,43%. The findings showed that the students agreed that Inside Out movie gives an impact and benefit on their daily activities. Furthermore, there were some impacts of character education values for the students like students might build a good character, value, behavior, social skills, and self-esteem. Students could learn to see how movie depict, influence, reflect, and shape the values of society and guide them in a journey to analyze their own values. Students could think critically and understand its implicit meaning of the importance of controlling and expressing the emotions properly. This proves that movies are not only for entertainment.
